GEAUGA LAKE 2005
A look back at a wet and wild summer in Aurora

By Michael Dery, webmaster

Now that the 2005 season has come to an end, it's time to take a look back at what could be considered a somewhat successful year at Geauga Lake.

WOULDN'T YOU LIKE TO BE OUR NEIGHBOR?

The park held a Community Day back on May 1, one week before opening for the season.  Free parking, free admission, and free Ben and Jerry's ice cream greeted guests who came out to the park.  While only the front gate area was open, including the Americana Wheel for those who wanted a ride, it was our first chance to see some of the changes the park made during the off season.

The Peanuts characters, which were new this year, came out to greet the guests.  It's great to see the park finally get some "ambassadors of fun" out on the midways again since Six Flags hardly ever used the Looney Tunes characters to their advantage.  I must say that the park did a fantastic job in utilizing the characters to the fullest, having them make many frequent appearances at the main gate all summer as well as throughout the Haunt.    With the Peanuts characters at Geauga Lake now, the park turned the former Geauga Lake Shoppe into a Snoopy Boutique, filled with Peanuts inspired clothing and gifts.

Community Day also gave us the opportunity to see how far along the repainting of Thunderhawk had come and they were about three-quarters completed at the time.  The new orange and yellow paint scheme has made a dramatic change to the park's skyline by adding some bright colors to the park.

If you took a ride on Americana that day, which was dismantled for a rehab this winter, you were able to view the progress on Wildwater Kingdom's construction across the lake.  I  hope the park works on Americana's lighting this off season as there were quite a few sections of lights that did not work this year.

Progress on Thunder Falls continues as of May 1, the park's Community Day.
